It seems scarcely necessary to say that there is an active spirit of inquiry abroad in the world today. People everywhere are searching for spiritual truth, perhaps as never before in the history of man. The remarkable feature of this search, however, is that not only the average man, but also the scientist in the laboratory, is probing deep into the universe trying to find the source of his being.
There is a definitely growing recognition of the fact that the Universe shows two aspects of activity. We first find that the physical world operates in accord with well-recognized and invariable laws, apparently without any volition on their part. Then we discover that the directive factor is Conscious Intelligence. These two forms of activity, which may seem to be contradictory to one another, have given rise to different types of thinking. There are those who maintain that man is fixed in a treadmill of life in which he is subject to the blind working of unchangeable law, and that he has very little if anything to say about the matter. Then there are those who ignore or minimize the working of law and say man struggles along through life entirely by a process of "trial and error" and happenstance. It is possible to reconcile these two apparently conflicting views because when seen in their true relation to one another they will be found to be complementary, not antagonistic.
Unquestionably thought is power. It is not a vague unpredictable influence floating around in the universe. Properly understood, thought is subject to laws as exact as those of chemistry or any other physical science. But at the same time within a law the individual has the fullest freedom.
