If we take the word “evil” . . . e-v-i-l, and spell it backwards we would have l-i-v-e . . . live. And, as Jesus said, live more abundantly. We cannot suppose that Jesus, who was so compassionate, would have held out any false promises to his followers or to the rest of the world. He certainly never would have placed the possibility of a great good before us only to snatch it away, as though we were not worthy of its attainment. One cannot read his words without realizing that hidden within them there is a deep meaning which can be applied to our everyday lives, right while we are in this world. So many of us are waiting for a better world to come hereafter and in a certain sense are missing the boat, so far as our voyage through this life is concerned.
If one were carefully to scan the teachings of the great prophets in the Old Testament, he would find this same thought running through all of them--there is something which can make us whole. Not by and by, but now. This something Jesus referred to as the pearl of great price for which a person will sell all he has in order that he may possess it. Nothing is more important, then, than that we should discover this truth that Jesus talked about, be able to recognize it when we see it, come to understand its nature and the law of its being, and then use this law which you and I call a Power for good greater than we are.
